Giving

Own nothing. Steward Everything.

Why Do We Give?

“It is required of stewards that they be found faithful.” – 1 Corinthians 4:2

1. We give to worship God.

Our gifts show that God is worth more than our money (Matthew 6:33). God in Christ is enough for us and will meet our needs both physically and spiritually. Our identity is rooted in Christ through the gospel (John 3:16; Romans 5:8).

We give because Jesus has given to us. When we give, we display the freedom God has given us in the gospel.

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.” – 2 Corinthians 8:9

2. We give to practice generosity.

As people of faith, God asks us to give faithfully (Act 2:45). Giving generously is a responsibility of every member of our church. God hasn’t blessed us financially to increase our standard of living, but to increase our standard of giving.

The Bible teaches that if we are loved by God and love Him in return, we would give generously, cheerfully, sacrificially, and regularly. Therefore, pray about what and how you should give.

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.” – 2 Corinthians 9:7-8

3. We give to support the ministry.

Giving is an invitation to join God in the work He is doing (Hebrews 13:16). God doesn’t need our money, yet He graciously calls us to invest in His activity and get in on what He is doing all over the world. We give because He has called us to be good stewards of everything that He has given us.

Part of that stewardship is regularly giving to and through the local church. Practically speaking, that takes financial resources (1 Timothy 5:17-18). Therefore, we give in order to fuel the work of our church in our congregation, our community, and around the globe.

“I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:18-19

4. We give to check our hearts.

Jesus Christ had more to say about money than almost any other subject. What we do with our money is a representation of what’s going on in our hearts. The Bible teaches that God is the owner of everything, including our money and possessions (Colossians 1:16-17).

When we give, we give back to God what He already owns. Our giving is an indication of our trust, discipleship, and commitment to Him.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:19-21

How Does My Giving Support the Local Church?

The ministry of Coats Baptist Church is supported by the generous financial contributions of its members and guests. Each year we prepare and adopt an annual spending plan. It is carefully prepared with detailed schedules for many months. The plan is an operating tool that guides our church in ministry, missions, and operations. It is important that every member and attendee understand their God-given role in supporting the financial needs of the church through systematic giving (tithing) to the church. We believe that the minimum Biblical standard for giving is 10% of our income, commonly called a “tithe” (Malachi 3:8-10).

Personalized envelopes are provided for every church member who desires to give by check or cash. Generic giving envelopes are provided in the worship center for your convenience. If you would like to give electronically, we encourage you to do so.

Benefits of Online Giving

Prioritize giving in your budget.

Giving to God should be the first priority of every paycheck. The Bible indicates that our regular giving should never be a left-over matter in life (Proverbs 3:9-10). It is easy to allow our budget to be compromised by various expenses and billing cycles. With online giving, you can set an automatic, recurring payment to ensure you always give according to your budget.

Strengthen your faithfulness.

Electronic contributions allow you stay on schedule and establish a consistent base of regular giving. Interruptions like forgetting your gift or being away on vacation can be remedied by online giving.

Go paperless.

Online giving helps the administrative efforts of the local church. As you give online, you expedite your gift, simplify our accounting, and strengthen our base of regular support.

Set an encouraging example.

As you plan and prioritize your giving, you will lead the way for others to grow and mature in their spiritual stewardship. Your regular, faithful, and budgeted online giving allows you to set an example worthy of following.
